The vocabulary pages below may be printed and copied - but                    first a brief guide on ...

How to use WS Pages.

Step 1. Write the new word that you want to learn on the left                  side together with it's translation on the right. However, you should only enter the translation if you feel that this step is necessary. Try to avoid having to rely on this first step as soon as possible!

new words          connecting words      my words          translation

roof                                                                                          ******

Step 2. Get into the habit of learning each new word by associating it with any interesting "connecting word(s)" that you find from your original example sentence - or from investigating the word in a quality dictionary. At least two of the words entered into the second column  should already be known to you, but you may also decide to include another "new word" if you feel that it will help you more.  e.g

new words           connecting words      my words          translation                                                    house                                                                          roof                                   tile                                                                                                                         protect

Step 3. Test yourself some time later. Can you now understand all the words (and their connections) without having to look at any translation? If so, move on to Step 4. ( If you can't, then just check the translation, re-investigate the word in your dictionary - and repeat Step 3  on another occasion)

Step 4. On another day, try to write some more of your own "connecting words" in the 3rd column. This will help you practise using your new word in different ways - and show that you can do so in the context of the new language only. The exercise is only to be completed if there is no need to look at the translation. If you are unable to complete this step, simply practise using the word more - and return to attempt to fill the gaps again at a later date.

new words           connecting words       my words          translation                                                    house                 home                                               roof                                   tile                      shower                                                                                     protect               rain

The four steps above begin to show how WS helps you to                         expand your vocabulary by practising your new language as                       much as possible over time. This should be much more useful than just learning  translations - and hopefully you will enjoy it more too.

Note. It's also a good idea to use the spaces at the top and bottom of       each page to priorise your word learning.

The space at the very top can be used to simply list those words that are important and almost known. This list will include...                                  (i) words that are "on the tip of your tongue" rather than "automatic"         (ii) words that are similar to the same word in your own language ...and...  (iii) words that you "know" but are unsure of the spelling.                        i.e. words that only need a small amount of extra help.

The words that you choose to list at the bottom of each page should be those that are unimportant to learn in the short-term. This strategy will      (i) give you an initial awareness/writing practice                                     (ii) allow you to concentrate on the sections above ...and...                      (iii) keep the words available for development later - once the more important vocabulary is known.

For full details of how to use the method you should also read                WS Concept ,  WS Technique and WS FAQ.
